How export prices are built
Each Incoterm adds the costs the seller pays on top of the one before it. Work out your FOB price first; CFR and CIF follow from it.
| Incoterm | Seller pays | Risk passes to buyer |
|---|---|---|
| EXW | Product and export packing | At your premises |
| FOB | EXW plus inland transport, export clearance and port charges | On board the vessel at the port of loading |
| CFR | FOB plus ocean freight to the destination port | On board at the port of loading |
| CIF | CFR plus minimum marine insurance | On board at the port of loading |
For a CIF quote, the insurance is taken on 110% of the CIF value. The calculator uses CIF = (FOB + freight) / (1 - 1.1 x insurance rate).
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the FOB price for export?
Add your product cost, export packing and the costs of getting the goods on board at the port of loading: inland transport, customs clearance, port and terminal charges and documentation. Add your profit margin and convert to the buyer's currency at your bank rate. That is your FOB price.
What is the difference between FOB, CFR and CIF?
FOB covers costs up to loading on the vessel at the port of loading. CFR adds ocean freight to the destination port. CIF adds ocean freight and minimum marine insurance. Under all three, risk passes to the buyer once the goods are on board.
How is insurance calculated for a CIF price?
Marine insurance is usually taken for 110% of the CIF value. This calculator uses CIF = (FOB + freight) / (1 - 1.1 x insurance rate), so the insurance is included in the value it covers.
Which exchange rate should I use?
Use the rate your bank gives you for export proceeds, or a slightly cautious rate if you quote for 30 days or more. The calculator does not fetch live rates, so enter today's rate yourself.
Should export incentives be included in the price?
Many exporters keep benefits such as RoDTEP or duty drawback out of the quotation and treat them as a cushion. If your market is very price-sensitive, you can lower your margin by the expected benefit.
