How to Find Buyers for Export from India: 12 Proven Ways

BuyGenix Solutions Team · Updated 17 Oct 2026 · 12 min read
In short

To find buyers for export from India, first use trade data to choose the countries that import your product, then reach buyers through live buyer requirements, B2B marketplaces, your Export Promotion Council, the DGFT Trade Connect platform, Indian missions abroad, trade fairs and LinkedIn. Before you ship, verify every buyer and agree safe payment terms. The 12 ways below are ordered from fastest to slowest to produce a first order.

Before you start: be ready to quote

Buyers move on quickly when a supplier cannot answer basic questions. Have these ready before you contact anyone:

  • Registrations: an IEC, GST with an LUT for zero-rated exports, and an RCMC from the council for your product.
  • The HS code of each product. It decides the duty in the buyer's country and is the key to trade data. See how to find your HS code.
  • A price you can defend: FOB and CIF prices for your main markets. Use the export price calculator.
  • A digital catalogue with specifications, pack sizes, minimum order quantity, certifications and photos. See why a digital catalogue matters.

1. Use trade data to pick your markets

Do not start by emailing the whole world. Start with the countries that already import your product. ITC Trade Map (trademap.org, run by the International Trade Centre) and UN Comtrade show, for each HS code, which countries import it, how much, and from whom. Look for markets where imports are large or growing and where India already supplies part of the demand.

Then check the duty your buyer would pay. India's trade agreements, such as the CEPAs with the UAE and Japan, can make your price more competitive than suppliers from other countries. The product export guides list the main buying markets for 30 common Indian products.

2. Answer live buyer requirements

The quickest orders come from buyers who already want to buy. A buyer requirement (or buy lead) is a real purchase need: the product, quantity, buyer location and date. Answering one is very different from cold emailing, because the buyer is already comparing suppliers.

On BuyGenix you can browse buyer requirements by category and by country for free. Our team reviews every requirement before it goes live, and each one is shared with at most 5 suppliers, so you are not competing with hundreds of sellers. Members contact buyers directly and get a dedicated Relationship Manager. See how verified buyer leads work.

Popular categories: agriculture, apparel and fashion, packaging and paper, handicrafts and home decor, food and beverages, leather products and pharma and healthcare.

3. List on B2B marketplaces

Global marketplaces such as Alibaba.com, and Indian ones such as IndiaMART, TradeIndia and ExportersIndia, bring enquiries to suppliers who keep their listings complete. Expect a high volume of enquiries, many of them small or not serious, so reply fast but qualify each one with questions about quantity, destination port and timeline before you send prices.

Paid plans on marketplaces raise your visibility, but they work best when your product pages are detailed: clear photos, exact specifications, MOQ, packing and certifications.

4. Use your Export Promotion Council

Every product group has an Export Promotion Council or commodity board, such as APEDA for agricultural products, the Spices Board, EEPC India for engineering goods, EPCH for handicrafts and GJEPC for gems and jewellery. With an RCMC you can join their buyer-seller meets, trade delegations and India pavilions at overseas fairs, and you appear in their member directories that foreign buyers use.

Some councils run large fairs in India that foreign buyers attend, such as the IHGF Delhi Fair (EPCH) and IIJS (GJEPC), and reverse buyer-seller meets where the council brings overseas buyers to India. See the list of commodity boards and sector EPCs.

5. Use DGFT Trade Connect and Indian missions

The Trade Connect ePlatform (trade.gov.in), run by DGFT, connects Indian exporters with Indian missions abroad, Export Promotion Councils and banks, and lists trade opportunities. The commercial wing of the Indian embassy or consulate in your target country can share importer lists and market information, and often helps with business meetings during trade visits.

For duty rates and rules in the buyer's country, the Indian Trade Portal by FIEO is a useful free source.

6. Exhibit at or visit trade fairs

A good international fair puts hundreds of buyers in one hall. Examples include Gulfood in Dubai and Anuga in Cologne for food, Ambiente in Frankfurt for consumer goods and home products, Heimtextil in Frankfurt for home textiles and Automechanika for auto parts. Even visiting without a stall lets you meet buyers and see competitor prices.

Exhibiting is expensive, so check support first: the Market Access Initiative (MAI) scheme of the Department of Commerce supports participation in fairs and buyer-seller meets, usually through the Export Promotion Councils. Book meetings before the fair, and follow up within a week.

7. Find importers on LinkedIn

Search for job titles such as purchase manager, sourcing manager, category buyer or import manager together with your product and country. Connect with a short, specific note, not a sales pitch, and share useful content about your product and market. LinkedIn works best for industrial products, private label, packaging and higher-value goods, where buyers research suppliers before they reply.

8. Search Google and Google Maps the right way

Simple search operators turn Google into a buyer directory. Try searches such as:

  • "importer" "basmati rice" Dubai or "wholesale" "spices" London
  • "distributor" "LED lights" site:.de to limit results to one country's websites
  • "we import" OR "importers of" "cotton towels"

On Google Maps, search for wholesale, importer or distributor plus your product in a target city. Visit each website, check what they already sell, and contact the purchase team with a short email that names their product range.

9. Use import shipment data

Some countries publish import records, such as bills of lading in the United States, and commercial trade data providers sell shipment records by product and importer. This shows you who is actually importing your product, how often and from which suppliers. It costs money, so it suits exporters who already know their target market and want a precise list of active importers.

10. Let buyers find you

Many buyers search online before they contact anyone. A fast website with one page per product, clear specifications and a contact form, plus a company profile on directories, helps buyers find you on Google. Write pages in the words buyers use, such as the product name, grade and HS code, and add your certifications. A free BuyGenix company profile also puts your products in front of buyers who search the directory.

11. Work with buying houses, agents and distributors

Many large international retailers source from India through buying houses and sourcing offices based in India. Getting approved as a vendor takes audits and time, but it can bring large, repeat orders. In your target country, a commission agent or distributor who already sells to your type of customer can open doors faster than direct outreach. Agree the commission, territory and exclusivity in writing.

12. Ask for referrals and repeat orders

The cheapest buyer is the one you already have. Deliver on time, share shipment updates, and ask satisfied buyers for repeat orders and introductions to their partners in nearby markets. A good reference from one importer is often what convinces the next one.

How to verify a buyer before you ship

Finding a buyer is half the job. The other half is making sure you get paid. Before you ship:

  • Check the company: its registration in the official company registry of its country, its website and how long the domain has existed, and whether the email uses the company domain.
  • Ask for trade references and look for the company in import data or trade directories.
  • Use ECGC: when you take export credit insurance, ECGC assesses the overseas buyer and sets a credit limit.
  • Choose safe payment terms for new buyers: advance payment, or a letter of credit confirmed by a good bank. See export payment terms explained.
  • Watch the red flags: requests for registration or "verification" fees, large orders without questions about price or quality, payment to a personal account, or pressure to ship before payment. Read how to identify fake export buyers.

From first contact to first order

Buyers usually contact several suppliers at once, so the exporter who replies first with a complete answer often wins. Reply within a few hours, ask the questions that matter (quantity, destination port, Incoterm, packing, certifications), and send a clear quotation with validity and payment terms. Read how to write a quotation that wins orders, then send samples to serious buyers and follow up on a fixed schedule. The buyer time-zone planner shows the best time to call each market.

Product-specific guides: find buyers for basmati rice, spices, readymade garments, tea and coffee, marble and granite, furniture and auto components.

Frequently asked questions

How can I find buyers for export from India for free?

Start with free sources: ITC Trade Map and UN Comtrade to see which countries import your HS code, the DGFT Trade Connect platform, your Export Promotion Council, the commercial wing of the Indian embassy in your target market, LinkedIn and Google searches. On BuyGenix you can browse live buyer requirements, with product, quantity and location, without paying.

Which is the best way to get the first export order?

For most new exporters the fastest route is to answer live buyer requirements that match your product, because the buyer already wants to buy. Combine this with a clear digital catalogue, a quick and complete quotation, and samples for serious buyers.

How do I check that a foreign buyer is genuine?

Check the company registration in its home country, its website and email domain, and its trade references. For credit terms, ECGC can assess the buyer when you take export credit insurance. Start with advance payment or a confirmed letter of credit, and be careful with anyone who asks for fees, samples free of cost in bulk, or payment to a personal account.

Do I need an IEC and RCMC before contacting buyers?

You can talk to buyers before registration, but you need an IEC to export, and an RCMC from the relevant Export Promotion Council to claim most export benefits and join council buyer-seller meets. It is better to have both ready before you quote.

How many buyers should I contact at a time?

Quality matters more than volume. It is better to follow up properly with 10 to 20 well-matched buyers than to send one email to 500 contacts. Keep a simple sheet of who you contacted, what they asked for and when to follow up.
