    Frequently asked questions

What registrations do I need to start exporting from India?

Most exporters need a business entity with a current bank account, an IEC from DGFT, GST registration and an LUT to export without paying IGST, an AD code registered with customs, and often an RCMC from the export promotion council or board for their product. Food exporters also need FSSAI, and some products need registration with a commodity board such as APEDA or the Spices Board.

Is GST registration mandatory for exporters?

Exports of goods count as inter-state supplies, so most exporters of goods need GST registration. It also lets you export under LUT and claim refunds of input tax.

What is an RCMC and do I need one?

An RCMC (Registration-cum-Membership Certificate) is issued by an export promotion council or commodity board. You usually need it to claim export benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy, and some products cannot be exported without the relevant board registration.
