Food businesses in India register or obtain a licence from FSSAI under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. A State licence is generally needed by manufacturers, traders, restaurants and other food businesses with annual turnover above ₹12 lakh and up to ₹20 crore, operating in one state. You apply on the FoSCoS portal; licences are issued for one to five years. Importers, 100% export-oriented units, large processors and businesses operating in more than one state need a Central licence instead.
