India is a major supplier of leather bags, wallets and accessories, with clusters in Kolkata, Chennai and Ambur, Kanpur, Agra and Delhi NCR. Fashion brands, department stores and online sellers in Europe and the USA buy Indian handbags for their quality leather and craftsmanship. They also expect strict chemical compliance and consistent finishing.
To export leather handbags from India, get an IEC, GST registration with an LUT and an RCMC from the Council for Leather Exports (CLE). Handbags with a leather outer surface fall under HS code 4202 21. Meet chemical limits such as chromium VI under EU REACH, approve samples and materials in writing, inspect before shipment, and quote per piece on FOB terms.
Confirm the 8-digit code with your customs broker.
EU buyers check leather against REACH, which limits chromium VI in leather articles that touch the skin, along with azo dyes and other restricted substances. Many brands share their own restricted substances list and ask for test reports from an accredited lab. Exotic leathers from protected species need CITES permits, and some brands refuse them entirely. Buyers increasingly ask where the leather came from and whether the tannery is certified, for example by the Leather Working Group.
Approve a proto sample, then a salesman or pre-production sample in the final leather, lining, hardware and colour. Keep signed approvals and a physical counter sample. Common defects are uneven edge paint, loose stitching, scratched hardware, colour variation between panels and smell. Arrange a final inspection at an agreed AQL level and pack each bag with a dust bag, stuffing and silica gel. See sending export samples.
Quote per piece FOB with leather type and thickness, lining, hardware finish, dimensions and packing stated. Small brands may order 100 to 300 pieces per style; larger buyers order thousands. Take an advance for leather and hardware, with the balance against documents or by letter of credit. Our payment terms guide explains the options.
